Why I Love Turtlenecks and Giving You Tips on Styling Them!
I never really understood the value of a turtleneck until recently! I remember at a young age my mom would style my sister and I in them for school and I would cringe. I remember thinking about what the other kids would think or say when they saw me showing up with an extra layer of material around my neck.
In growing up (aka maturing), I’m gravitating more and more to turtlenecks each and every day! I don’t know if it’s because I see them often while shopping for MTYA or because its life telling me that I should reconsider my hesitation against turtlenecks. Either way, I’m slowly becoming a turtleneck supporter. From bold to neutral colors, I’m starting a personal turtleneck collection and I’m not mad about it! On top of that, I’m prioritizing the “turtleneck” aisle in thrift stores because I want to own every single color (even stripe and pattern ones).
When thinking about how much my style has gravitated toward them, I decided to write a post about it in hopes that someone else can reclaim their turtleneck passion. In this post, I’ll provide a few styling tips for you to consider on your turtleneck journey.
Styling Tip #1: If you’re slowly easing your way back into the turtleneck movement, consider pairing your turtleneck with a pair of patterned, neutral, or colored slacks (or skirts). When I got back into styling turtlenecks, this tip is where my adventure began. By styling your turtleneck with a pair of slacks (or skirts), you can decide if you would like to go more causal or formal depending on your shoe choice. In this photo, you’ll see I styled a pair of white boots with my combination. For more of a casual look, consider styling your turtleneck with a pair of sneakers.
Styling Tip #2: Turtlenecks are great for pairing underneath sweaters, blazers, or light jackets. Usually I style a blouse underneath these selections, but lately I’ve switched to pairing turtlenecks underneath. Just like blouses, turtlenecks are thin, very light for pairing, and serve as the foundation for any outfit when layering. In this photo, you’ll see I paired my turtleneck under this block colored jacket as a way of allowing the bold colors of the jacket to stand alone from my turtleneck. Again, by pairing your turtlenecks with various layers, you’re allowing the turtleneck to serve as the starting point for your entire outfit.
Styling Tip #3: When accessorizing your turtlenecks, think about fun ways of pairing statement accessories such as bold earrings or necklaces. I always have fun pairing accessories that match the color of the turtleneck I’m wearing, no matter if the turtleneck is colored or neutral. By pairing a bold accessory with your turtleneck, you’re taking the attention away from the turtleneck and putting the spotlight on your accessories. Again, consider pairing a necklace as an additional option.
When I think about styling my next turtleneck, I get so excited! I hope these styling tips make you just as excited, or if not more when it comes to styling your collection. Try them and let me know how they turn out by commenting below on this post!
