Four Simple Ways to UpCycle Your Holiday Looks

Four Simple Ways to UpCycle

Your Holiday Looks

Growing up my mom always expressed to me the importance of using the pieces in my closet instead of going out and buying new clothes every time I had to attend an event. She would say, “Why don’t you work with the pieces you already have in your closet?” or “You can save a lot of money if you wear the pieces you have, but think about pairing a different accessory with that piece!” I never fully processed this until I realized how much money I could save and creativity I could develop in refreshing some of my favorite pieces (hence the learning curve to becoming a stylist).

Although it took me years to finally realize that my mom was right about reusing my pieces, it also took me years to truly realize the value in upcycling my existing wardrobe. Now, I treat my closet like I’m playing chest. I always have fun pulling out my favorite dresses, blouses, and slacks and seeing how I can refresh these pieces by simply pairing a different accessory. I love the feeling of knowing I purchased pieces years ago, but now enjoy refreshing them to feel “new” again. Now since I’m all about saving money and refreshing my pieces, these are the questions I constantly ask myself:

  • How can I refresh some of my favorite pieces by pairing my favorite accessories (belts, necklaces, hats, clutches)?

  • Is there a different way for me to layer my pieces either with a blazer, jacket, or overcoat?

  • How can I incorporate different seasonal pieces into my Winter wardrobe or holiday looks?

That’s why in this post I’m outlining four simple ways to upcycle your holiday looks without having to invest dollars into newly purchased holiday pieces. As examples for your reference, I’ve pulled together some of my favorite MTYA styled looks. I hope these tips inspire you to upcycle some of your favorite holiday pieces straight from your closet!

Tip #4: We always have an assortment of hats in our closets, but have you thought about ways to accessorize your hats when it comes to your holiday looks? I transitioned this Fall inspired hat (pictured) into the Winter by simply pairing this hat with a two-piece monochrome set. Not only do the colors match perfectly, but hats are a great way to go off the beaten path when accessorizing your looks this season.
